* Saoto (Soto ajam) A dish originally from Java, Indonesia but with a typical Surinamese touch, that is served in every warung (Indonesian restaurant) in Suriname. Saoto is usually served with some side dishes you can add to it, according to taste. This is also the case with most Surinamese dishes. Soato is spicy, and, if you want to, you can add, the sambal (very hot pepper); only for those who dare! * Cassava. Cassava soup, a recipe originally from West Africa; is one of Suriname's favorite dishes. The added ingredients give it the typical Surinam touch. Easy to prepare, it can be served as a side dish to complete the meal! * Napi The soup is also easy to prepare. The basic soup ingredients are similar to that of cassava and okra. It's a very delicious soup but can also be eaten with rice. * Okra "Bravu", as it's called in Suriname, is a typical African dish, a long time favorite of locals and visitors alike. Consisting of okras, smoked fish, shrimps and vegetables; it is easy to prepare and can be served with mashed green plantains or white rice. |
